about

I wrote this song around the same time that my old band Jabberwock recorded the Southland album. We recorded a quick demo. Unfortunately, we never bothered to mix the demo onto a DAT tape, as we did most of our other work at the time. Instead, we dumped a rough mix on a cassette tape that has long been lost. You youngish types may have zero idea about the recording mediums to which I am referring. Anyway, I always liked this song, which, through no fault of its own, never found a place on any of my records until now.

lyrics

PENETRATE THAT SKULL

These are strange times
But that doesn’t make things different
The bad old days
It’s good to be moving on again

You could find me in your heart
God knows you’re all over mine
So sink into me, sink into me
Call your troops off
The battle is won

First of all, don’t make a list
Secondly, don’t put things in order
Number three, don’t ask questions
Finally don’t even say anything at all

We like you when you’re quietly stupid
Passive, gentle, and dull
(Do you want me to show you?)
Courteous and unassuming
(Do you want me to show you?)
Nothing could penetrate that skull

If you can’t be beautiful
If you can’t be dutiful
Can’t be inscrutable
Then why should you live?
Why should you live?

You could find me in your heart
God knows you’re all over mine
So sink into me, sink into me
Call your troops off
The battle is won

(Do you want me to show you?)
