about

To live is to be sad. So, I am naturally suspicious of anyone who smiles more than is appropriate, especially when that person is myself.

Don't get me wrong. I am happy and enjoy life. It's just that, as Anakin Skywalker and Severus Snape discovered, the dark side is much more interesting and therefore entices the brave and curious.

I promise not to cast any spells or play Jedi mind tricks on you.

I stole the bridge from an old song I wrote a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away. I always liked that section and had been waiting for the right opportunity to drop it in a song. The energy and power of the bridge presents a dynamic juxtaposition with the quietness of the remainder of the track.

There is a fair amount of acoustic guitar on this song and the rest of the album. My hope is that the intersection of electronica with acoustic instruments gives the music a sense of humanity, bobbing about on the high seas of high technology.

lyrics

WHAT'S BEHIND THIS SMILE

Staring down my demons
In my breakneck style
Keep those bastards guessing
What’s behind this smile

Look them in the eye
They just fade away
Like plumes of lethal smoke
Rising from the grave

What’s behind this smile
Is anybody’s guess
What’s behind this smile
Is too much to confess

Vultures on the rooftops
Watching every mile
Waiting to devour
What’s behind this smile

They will wait forever
Looming in the sky
Like thunderclaps and storm clouds
Floating in the eye

What’s behind this smile
Is really quite a mess
What’s behind this smile
Is too much to confess

Yes I know the devil looks like an honest man
And I know the devil marches in this wicked land
And I know that God is sick of this human race
And I know he doesn’t listen when us earthlings pray
And I know the time will come when my name is called
And I know I’ve got to be there standing quiet and tall
And I know the time will come when this world will fall
Yes I know the time will come when we end it all

Yes I know

Keep those bastards guessing
What’s behind this smile
