about

I recorded the Use Your Words album in my home studio on a Mac G5 using Logic Pro and Reason software. I played or programmed every instrument you hear. If you want more technical information on the equipment and instruments I use, email me and I'll be happy to answer your questions if I can.

I used a ton of samples and loops obtained (legally, I hope) from all over the place. On certain songs, I used samples of a Romanian woman singing. The opening sound on Body is the Romanian chanteuse played back at a lower pitch and with a lot of different effects.

This was one of the first songs I wrote for Use Your Words and it felt like an opening track from day one. The basic structure of the song never changed. I've remixed the song what seems like a million times as newer, more powerful versions of Logic and Reason have come out, and as my skills have improved. It is possible to over-mix a song, but I hope I have avoided that dangerous path here. Each successive mix has sounded much better than its predecessors.

Lyrically, Body plunges headlong in the depths of my inner psyche. Without being too specific, the song describes the feeling of looking at oneself from the outside and seeing oneself as a rudderless organism behaving in accordance with the laws of nature. At one point in my life, I considered myself a radical behaviorist and greatly admired the work of B.F. Skinner and cohorts. I now believe the Freudian constructs of the un-conscious and sub-conscious do, in fact, exist. However, I see no reason why those parts of the brain would be immune from the laws of behaviorism. Unfortunately, we're generally not aware of what's happening in those unlit places of the brain until it's too late – potent conditioning has already taken place. I think that's why it's so damn hard to change, even if you really want to and recognize that you are doing things that destroy yourself and others.

lyrics

BODY WITHOUT A SOUL

Running aground, running amok
Out of control, out of luck
Going along, going astray
The sweetest pill to kill the pain

Leave me lonely, lonely
Body without a soul, body without a soul
Leave me lonely, lonely
Body without a soul, body without a soul

Buying more time, buying release
If I could pay, I’d buy my peace
Pushing it hard, pushing it in
Won’t play your game, so I can’t win

I can take it
I can fake it
I can make it
I can break it
I forsake it
I can take it away

Closing my eyes, searching my mind
Looking for something deep inside
Rising up in the afterglow
Another body without a soul

I can take it
I can fake it
I can make it
I can break it
I forsake it
I can take it away

I can take it
I can fake it
I can make it
I can break it
I forsake it
I can take it away

Running aground, running amok
Looking for someone I can f….
